Nurses at the Hospital da Luz Arrábida are strongly committed to their mission to provide excellent care to every client who enters the Hospital.

The Nursing Body of the Hospital da Luz Arrábida works to promote health, prevent illness, care for the patient’s needs, and encourage adaptation for socio-professional reinsertion and an active life. By engaging in a continuous quest to achieve more from their performance, the Nursing Body supports the idea that theirs is a profession that requires continual learning, awareness of the evolution of scientific knowledge, and the highest standards of care. The nursing body actively demonstrates this philosophy by regularly developing or collaborating in training and research projects throughout the hospital.

Our nursing professionals were carefully selected by the Directors of Nursing, based on demanding criteria, not only in the training requirements, but also for the quality of their performance and previous experience in the profession. In the context of their professional activity, the nurses of Hospital da Luz Arrábida respect the Ethical Code, the Regulations on the Exercising of the Nursing Profession (REPE), the Quality Standards for Nursing Care and the Competences Defined for Nurses Responsible for General Care by the Portuguese Board of Nursing.

The Directors of Nursing encourage all nurses at the hospital to incorporate quality care and excellence in their daily practice. The following guiding principles of nursing from the Portuguese Board of Nursing have been adopted by the Hospital da Luz Arrábida:

  • Client Satisfaction: nurses shall seek to respect their patients´ individual capacities, beliefs, values and desires; seek empathy in all relations; set up partnerships in the planning of care; involve the family or others close to the patient in the process of care; and minimize the negative impact associated with environmental changes that arise during the process of health support.
  • Health Promotion: involves contextualizing the health situation of clients for their families and for society; creating and taking advantage of opportunities to promote healthy lifestyles; enabling adaptation to life, growth and development processes; and supplying information to support cognitive learning and new capacities of the client.
  • Complications Prevention: to identify potential complications as quickly as possible; implementing and evaluating interventions that help avoid or minimize the effect of complications; applying scientifically based nursing interventions to identified complications; referring patients to the appropriate health professionals when needed; supervising delegated nursing activities; and being responsible for the decisions taken and the acts practiced or delegated.
  • Maximizing well-being and self-care: identify patient issues as quickly as possible and be prepared to intervene; implement and assess interventions that support increased well-being and fulfillment of life activities on which the client depends.
  • Contributions to functional adaptation: requires the recognition of the need for continuity in nursing care; planning the release of hospitalized clients in accordance with their needs and the resources of the community; optimizing the capacities of the client, their families, or others to manage the prescribed therapeutic system; teaching the client necessary skills for their functional adaptation.
  • Contributing to the organization of nursing care: to be aware of the reference framework for professional nursing and ongoing improvement systems regarding the quality of professional nursing; to understand the nursing registration system which systematically incorporates the nursing care needs of the client with the nursing interventions taken, along with the results of those interventions; seeking the satisfaction of nurses regarding the quality of their professional role; adapting the number of nurses available with the nursing care requirements; being aware of the ongoing training policy for nurses, promoting professional development and quality; deploying methodologies for the organization of quality nursing care.

The evaluation of nurses at the Hospital da Luz Arrábida is focused on personal and professional competences and on performance objectives including continuous training objectives and contributions to the excellent results of the medical team in the hospital.
