Hospital da Luz Arrábida has an Emergency Department that serves both adults and children, operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Hospital da Luz Arrábida Emergency Department is staffed by a team of professionals led by Dr. António Carneiro, including specialists in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, and is permanently supported by doctors from the various medical and surgical specialties within the hospital. It is a complete service which is additionally supported by the Intensive Care Unit, Clinical Analysis Laboratory and Imaging Center, providing access to state-of-the-art technology and the rigor, quality and safety that is always present in the healthcare services provided at Hospital da Arrábida.

The Pediatric Emergency Department operates 24 hour a day, 365 days a year, under the leadership of Dr. Carlos Duarte and Dr. Fernanda Marcelino, and includes an experienced team of pediatric doctors, Neonatologists and Intensive Care specialists, who are also responsible for pediatric inpatients. The Pediatric Emergency Department has its own waiting rooms, consultation and observation areas, all decorated with younger patients in mind.

  • What is the Emergency Department at Hospital da Luz Arrábida?

    The Emergency Department at Hospital da Luz Arrábida is a service providing medical and surgical care, and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of urgent/emergency situations, as well as those situations that, while not considered to be urgent/emergencies, require rapid intervention. The Emergency Department at Hospital da Luz Arrábida is dedicated to the care of adults.

    Since April 2013, Hospital da Luz Arrábida offers a Pediatric Emergency Department, available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, staffed by an on-site team of experienced Pediatric doctors, distinguished in Neonatology and Intensive Care.

  • What resources are available at Hospital da Luz Arrábida?

    Hospital da Luz Arrábida Emergency Department has all the physical, technological and human resources required to provide excellent medical and surgical care within its area of intervention, with the exception of severe trauma, severe burns and psychiatric emergencies. The Emergency Department is managed under the guidance of the Internal Medicine Unit and is run by physicians from the areas of General Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics with 24 hour support from General Surgery, Orthopedics, Otorhinolaryngology, Neurology, Gynecology-Obstetrics, Imaging Services, Clinical Pathology Laboratory and Blood Service (Immunohaematology).

    Hospital da Luz Arrábida has an ICU (Intensive and Intermediate Care Unit), which is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with qualified physicians always physically present, thereby ensuring the availability and capacity for treatment of all kinds of serious diseases which may require this level of care.

    Areas of common usage in the Emergency Department include a waiting area, access and administrative areas, four consultation rooms, a treatment room (with the capacity to carry out minor surgery, casts and treatments) and an observation room with six to ten beds/armchairs and reanimation capability.

    Initial medical care is provided by physicians specialized in General Medicine, Internal Medicine or Pediatrics. Physicians from the Emergency Department may, when required, call on their colleagues in other specialties within the Hospital da Luz Arrábida (see Departments and Service Lines). This organizational model enables a timely response to all clinical situations within the scope of services of the Hospital da Luz Arrábida.

    The human resources available in the Emergency Department include physicians (see Hospital da Luz Arrábida Emergency Department Team), a nursing team, specialist technicians, and administrative employees dedicated to the Emergency Department.

  • Location of Hospital da Luz Arrábida Emergency Department

    The Emergency Department is located on Level 0, has an internal entrance through the reception area, and a separate external entrance through the car park alongside the main entrance of Arrábida Shopping (facing the River Douro).

  • Operation of Hospital da Luz Arrábida Emergency Department

    There are two ways to access the Emergency Department:

    • Patients may call to schedule a time to be seen - open consultation
    • Patients may go in person to the Emergency Department without any prior scheduling – urgent/unscheduled consultation

    In the first scenario, the patient will be seen by a doctor from General Medicine who will advise, refer and, when considered necessary, request the cooperation of the appropriate specialties.

    In the second scenario, the patient will be screened by a triage nurse from the Emergency Department's nursing team and, in cases where serious signs are present, will be immediately referred for medical consultation. If there are no symptoms of serious disease, the patient will wait to be seen by a doctor from General Medicine.

    The Emergency Department of Hospital da Luz Arrábida is capable of meeting the diagnosis and treatment needs of adults with serious diseases, including the activation of the fast-track system (with the exception of trauma cases), as well as the capacity to evaluate and refer those patients without serious diseases who use the Emergency Department.

    In the interests of providing the best possible care, it is important that, upon visiting the Emergency Department, the patient or their companion is in possession of information that may prove important in the diagnosis/treatment process (for example, circumstances and details relating to the occurrence, history of allergies, reports on previous tests or treatments) and any documents (identification, health card, national insurance card from another health sub-system, health insurance card) that may be required.

    Following initial evaluation, and where appropriate, it is possible to call on doctors from other specialties within Hospital da Luz Arrábida through the use of specific communication channels, including being physically present when clinically indicated.

    Imaging Services, situated next to the Emergency Department and the Clinical Pathology Laboratory are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. When required, the operating theatre may be used 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

    Where the clinical situation requires a period of observation or immediate treatment, the patient is referred to the Observation Unit under the supervision of Emergency Department physicians and care of the Emergency Department nursing team. In cases where it is considered appropriate, patients may be admitted, at any time of the day or night, onto a ward or into the Intermediary / Intensive Care Unit, where they will be continuously monitored in person by a qualified physician, by the nursing team and by medical auxiliaries

  • Situations in which help should be sought at Hospital da Luz Arrábida Emergency Department

    Hospital da Luz Arrábida Emergency Department is a service dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of urgent/emergency situations and other situations that require rapid intervention, namely:

    • Shortness of breath
    • Intense chest pain
    • Any other intense and persistent pain
    • Temporary loss of vision and headache
    • Loss of consciousness
    • Sudden weakness or inability to talk or move
    • Possible poisoning
    • Possible overdose on medication or narcotics
    • Injuries to the head and face
    • High temperature
    • Slight injuries
    • Severe bleeding
    • Coughing or vomiting blood
    • Possible fractures
    • Convulsions

    Colds, common infections, slight temperatures, frequent pains, common stomach or intestinal alterations and running out of your current medication are common reasons for visiting the Emergency Department. The majority of these situations are better treated by a scheduled consultation with your general practitioner and are not situations that warrant a visit to the Emergency Department. In these cases, the physicians in the Emergency Department will try to alleviate the complaint and refer the patient to consultations where they can receive scheduled follow-up.

    When in doubt, Hospital da Luz Arrábida Emergency Department is available, especially when dealing with debilitated or elderly patients, as they are less resistant to health problems than adults or young people.

  • Who can access Hospital da Luz Arrábida Emergency Department?

    Anyone may access Hospital da Luz Arrábida Emergency Department. However, this hospital is a private health unit, therefore, if the patient is not the beneficiary of any health sub-system or health insurance that has an agreement with the hospital (see Agreements and Conventions), expenses shall be paid in full by the patient.

    When a patient wishes to have a standard check-up, general evaluation, be seen by a doctor or be observed in cases where the disease does not pose an immediate risk to the patient's life, a consultation should be scheduled with the Pediatric, General Medicine or Internal Medicine specialties or with any other medical specialty. During the scheduled consultation, doctors from these specialties will perform a standard check-up, focusing their attention on preventive care and the promotion of habits and behavior that support a healthy lifestyle.
