Innovative heart surgery at Hospital da Luz
Last January at the Hospital da Luz another minimally invasive mitral valve surgery via right minithoracotomy was performed, led by heart surgeon Ricardo Arruda Pereira.
Minithoracotomy prevents median sternotomy and its complications. Moreover, the results are much more favorable for patient recovery in the immediate postoperative period and particularly in resuming normal activity, because the recovery period after discharge is substantially shorter.
This was the first time in Portugal that a biological mitral prosthesis was inserted; in all other surgeries the valve was repaired.
