Urology and robotics: in the hands of the most experienced
The first day of the symposium on «Minimally invasive and robotic urology», which forms part of Leaping Forward – the international medical congress happening at Hospital da Luz - was specially consecrated to Vipul Patel, the most experienced robotic surgeon in the field of urology globally.
Patel, North-American surgeon from Celebration Health Hospital, in Florida, was the star of the symposium; he spent the afternoon in the OR of Hospital da Luz, where he performed two live surgeries with the Da Vinci robot. During the procedure, the surgeon took his peers in the audience sitting in Auditorium 1 (Hospital da Luz) through each step of his technique, while proposing solutions for the problems which may arise from this surgical technique and answering the questions addressed to him.
This surgeon from Florida has been using robotic surgery for ten years and he has broken the record of the number of radical prostatectomies performed using this technique; over six thousand. Kris Maes, the director of the robotic surgery centre at Hospital da Luz and director of this symposium, followed the surgeries performed by his colleague Patel – surgeries like the ones he has been performing for some years in Lisbon, and for which he is now regarded as one of the most experienced in this surgical technique Europe wide.
