Luz Saúde Group Recognized by Portuguese Ministry of Health as Reference Centre in Oncologic Treatment
Luz Saúde Group has, from now on, two reference centres in oncologic diagnosis and treatment, recognized as such by the Portuguese Ministry of Health. This recognition confirms high quality healthcare services in the area and certifies the existence of the necessary requirements for international acknowledgement.
These two centres were assigned to Hospital da Luz, in Lisbon, and Hospital Beatriz Ângelo (HBA), the public hospital managed in public-private partnership by Luz Saúde, which are now a reference in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with rectal cancer.
Direção Geral da Saúde – DGS (General Direction for Health), which conducted the process of reference centres selection in hospitals all over the country, made its choice based on rigorous criteria concerning hospital casuistry in rectal cancer diagnosis and treatment, and the fulfilment of specific quality requirements regarding the results obtained in the treatment of this pathology.
This means that both hospitals proved to have significant number of patients with this same type of cancer, being diagnosed and treated in their units. But not only that, for they had to indicate results specific to such cases, that is to say rates of complication, relapse and mortality, average time of hospital internment, clinical risk rate and measures of clinical safety, etc., showing excellent indicators. The transparency of processes and the guarantee of multidisciplinary assistance assuring the possibility of clinical research and training for younger professionals at both hospitals, were other indicators considered by DGS in its choice.
Finally, the clinical protocols adopted by hospital, the teams organizing structure and the quality of professionals allowed the attainment of excellent results in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with this pathology, which was also recognized by the Portuguese Ministry of Health in the choice of HBA and Hospital da Luz as reference centres.
This competition process launched last September by DGS was addressed to every hospital in the country, public and private, with the purpose of «recognition of National Reference Centres to provide healthcare services, namely for the diagnosis and treatment of oncologic diseases, among others», as stated in regulation nº 194/2014.
According to the DGS document published in Diário da República, the objective was to identify hospital units «concentrating casuistry and resources for diagnosis, treatment and research» of different medical and surgical pathologies, recognized by their quality internally, as well as in the context of healthcare services offered to foreign citizens of the European Unit and of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries.
More than a hundred hospitals applied, among them HBA and Hospital da Luz, in both cases for recognition as reference centres in adult oncology in the area of rectal cancer.
