Palliative Care Unit re-Certified by the European Society of Medical Oncology
The Palliative Care Unit of the Hospital da Luz, was re-certified for the integrated practice of Palliative Care and Oncology by the ESMO (European Society of Medical Oncology), and recognized as a reference unit for the elevated standard of care they provide for the period 2015-2017. This certification was obtained for the first time in September 2011 and at that time, the Palliative Care Unit of the Hospital da Luz in Portugal was the first to receive it.
The ESMO is one of the world's most prestigious medical societies in oncology. The distinction now returned to assign to the Palliative Care Unit of the Hospital da Luz is based on the evaluation of agreed quality practices assessed anonymously by qualified experts, and aims to confirm a clinical practice that recognizes that many cancer patients, whether heal or not, benefit from an early intervention of palliative care throughout their illness and not just in the last days of life. It also confirms that the oncology and palliative care can be provided in line and simultaneously to improve the quality of life of patients, with benefits for them and their families.
