Robotic surgery was introduced in Portugal, seven years ago, in Hospital da Luz Lisboa, which remained until quite recently the only hospital in the country to perform surgeries using this technique and to have a surgical robot available.

Urologist Kris Maes, Belgian, was pioneer in our country in robotic surgery, contributing to the training and development of many Portuguese physicians from Hospital da Luz.

Presently, robotic surgery is a surgical technique used in many specialities, such as urology, gynaecology, cardiothoracic surgery and general surgery.

The 10th edition of the Portuguese Society of Minimally Invasive Surgery Congress will take place in Lisboa, from 12-14 October, and gathers specialists from all over the country, this year being especially dedicated to topics related with rigid endoscopy, flexible endoscopy and image-guided procedures.
