Endoscopic Surgery on 22-day-old Baby

An infant of only 22 days of age was successfully submitted to surgery to repair an inguinal hernia, by means of minimally invasive surgery, at Hospital da Luz Arrábida.

The laparoscopic intervention was performed by João Moreira Pinto, surgeon of this hospital, together with the team of pediatric surgery, highly experienced in minimally invasive procedures.

Laparoscopic surgery has been performed successfully at Hospital da Luz Arrábida, presenting several advantages. First of all, it prevents complications with post-operative wounds, and allows a faster recovery involving less pain, as well as the detection and eventual repair of a contralateral hernia (avoiding a second surgery on about 15% of the babies). Finally, it is also a beneficial solution for the infant, in aesthetical terms.
