Hospital da Luz Arrábida already Performed 200 Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgeries

Hospital da Luz Arrábida já fez 200 cirurgias de catarata com laser femtosegundo

Hospital da Luz Arrábida has performed, since 2015, about 200 femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgeries, the most recent and excellent treatment in the field.

Hospital da Luz Arrábida is one of the three ophthalmology centres in the country performing femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgeries, the most recent and first-rate treatment in the field. Since 2015, the hospital has already made approximately 200 cataract surgeries using this technique, which is less invasive and offers better results for patients, besides allowing higher surgical precision.

Hospital da Luz Arrábida is pioneer in the use of femtosecond laser, and in 2008, it was the first private hospital in the North of Portugal to introduce this technique to assist ophthalmic surgeries, namely in corneal refractive surgery (for the correction of myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia, for instance).

“Meanwhile, since May 2015, we started using femtosecond laser also in some steps of cataract surgery, with very positive results. Precision and safety are higher and the operation time shorter, in addition to less postoperative complications. Postoperative visual recovery is faster than in conventional surgery, for the pressure applied to the eye is lesser” – explains António Marinho, ophthalmologist who, together with Maria da Luz Freitas and Ramiro Salgado, performs these surgeries at Hospital da Luz Arrábida.

The use of this technology reflects Hospital da Luz Arrábida’s concern in providing its patients better and safer healthcare.
