Hospital da Luz Arrábida was present in Oporto EDP Marathon 2025, that took place last November 2, providing supplementary medical support throughout the event. Thousands of athletes, professionals and amateurs, participated in the marathon (42 km), the 10 km running, and the 6 km mini marathon / walking, with the starting and finishing line at the Queimógrafo, in Oporto City Park. The Hospital da Luz Arrábida team included the doctor Rui Barros and the nurses José Pedro and André Castanheira (all of them in the photo above) and was prepared to act promptly in any clinical situation, actively contributing to the safety of athletes and the smooth unfold of the initiative. The practice of sport in endurance events such as a marathon requires not only a careful preparation by athletes, but also the presence of qualified clinical support. The intervention of Hospital da Luz Arrábida, although as support provider and not the official medical entity, was thought to ensure surveillance, screening, and assistance to athletes in need along the event. The engagement of Hospital da Luz Arrábida in initiatives such as the Oporto EDP Marathon happens in the context of its investment on sports medicine and in the proximity to the community, promoting health, welfare, and safety. This hospital has a specialized unit dedicated to exercise and sports medicine – the Sports Medicine Centre – that meets the needs of any athlete, either recreational or professional, providing sports medicine consultations, functional assessment, diagnosis and treatment of injuries associated with the practice of sport, besides the follow-up of the practitioners’ health.
