Hospital da Luz Arrábida hosted, this week, surgeons from five different countries who participated in a training program organized by the European Hernia Society (EHS). The course included theoretical presentations, video viewings, and live surgeries, which were performed by the team led by Jaime Vilaça . This team demonstrated minimally invasive techniques for inguinal and umbilical hernia surgery, which account for about 90% of hernias in adults. The course was held as part of the EHS annual meeting, taking place in Porto on June 3, 4, and 5, and is the world’s largest event dedicated to hernia and abdominal wall surgery. The pre-congress training course, coordinated by Jaime Vilaça, featured a distinguished faculty that also included general surgeons Hugo Louro and Luís Couceiro. The course focused on abdominal wall repair techniques, specifically the transabdominal placement of preperitoneal mesh (TAPP). With a strong practical component, the program included three live surgeries, complemented by theoretical sessions dedicated to each type of hernia and interactive moments of discussion between trainers and participants. Along these sessions, advice and technical tips were shared with particular emphasis on prothesis placement in preperitoneal position, an increasingly valued approach for its clinical benefits. The course was destined to general surgeons with different levels of experience in laparoscopy, who afterwards made an overall assessment of the training between 95 and 100, which reflects clearly the high degree of satisfaction and the quality of the teaching. The active participation of Hospital da Luz Arrábida team in this course reinforces our commitment to innovation, continuous training, and excellence in healthcare provided to our patients, thus contributing to the evolution of laparoscopic surgery and better clinical results.
