Ramiro Manuel Salgado , Hospital da Luz Arrábida ophthalmologist, concluded his doctorate degree in Medical Sciences , last February 16, at Abel Salazar Biomedical Sciences Institute (ICBAS), Oporto University. His thesis, entitled “The Role of Low-energy Femtosecond Laser in Lens Surgery”, received the unanimous approval of the jury with distinction. His doctorate research had for advisors António Marinho , from Hospital da Luz Arrábida, and Paulo Torres, from Hospital da Prelada, in Oporto. The thesis was presented before a prestigious international jury presided by Manuel Vilanova (ICBAS), and including as members Jasper Østergaard Hjortdal (Aarthus University, Danmark), Alireza Mirshahi (Heidelberg University, Germany), Ariel Guerreiro (Oporto University Sciences Faculty), Fernando Faria Correia (Minho University School of Medicine), and Paulo Torres. Ramiro Manuel Salgado has long been dedicated to refractive surgery, in particular cataract and transparent lens surgery , conducting several studies published in renowned international scientific journals. Among the main conclusions of his doctorate thesis, we highlight: Presentation of evidence on the relevant role of low-energy femtosecond laser in lens surgery in general and the surgical treatment of presbyopia in particular (commonly referred as eyestrain). Relevance of this technique with a view to produce better and safer vision results. Demonstration of efficacy, high safety, and the relevant possibility of treatment customization according to individual characteristics. Therefore, the thesis is impactful in terms of knowledge in this domain of Ophthalmology. Ramiro Salgado conciliates his medical activity with the research work, being reviewer, author, and coauthor of multiple articles in international scientific journals.
