World Family Doctor Day , observed every year on May 19, draws attention this year to the role of these specialists in the world of digital health, positioning itself as “a moment to celebrate the work of doctors who are, in most cases, the first point of contact within the healthcare system — and often the most trusted.” “Artificial intelligence can detect patterns, generate documentation and optimise workflows. But it cannot recognise hesitation. It cannot interpret silence. It cannot perceive fear behind polite reassurance. In many of our cultures, meaning is conveyed indirectly, through tone, through pauses, and through relationships built over years. No algorithm captures that,” states the website of the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA). According to the organisation, “family doctors do far more than treat illness. They treat the whole person.” It adds: “Family medicine is guided by values that no technology can replace: continuity of care, patient-centred care, integrated care — addressing physical, mental and social wellbeing together — and community engagement.” It is for this reason, the organisation explains, that in 2026 World Family Doctor Day celebrates doctors navigating a world reshaped by digital technology, bringing their values of compassion, continuity and person-centred care into the digital age. Hospital da Luz also marks this day by celebrating all General and Family Medicine doctors who share the values of excellence and teamwork that define clinical practice across our hospitals and clinics. The hospital extends its gratitude to all of them for their commitment and engagement in a shared vision for the future — one in which new technologies, always safe and trustworthy, help free up healthcare professionals to “listen, reflect and build trusting relationships” with those who entrust us with their health. Thank you to all the General and Family Medicine teams across the Hospital da Luz network!
