The correct and frequent sanitation of the hands, in social and professional environment, through washing with soap and water or friction with alcoholic-based antiseptic solution, is a fundamental measure for the mitigation of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, due to its irritating effect, it can cause or aggravate the eczema of the hands, usually manifested by redness, peeling or fissures, and evolves to pruritus, burning or even pain. The prevention of these problems passes through a series of measures, but never through the diminishing of the frequency of the hands sanitation. What to do to prevent skin lesions? Do not use rings, bracelets, wristwatches and other adornments; When washing the hands with water and soap, dry your hands without rubbing and, with the hands still slightly wet, apply a moisturizing cream / emollient (with no perfume); When washing the hands with an alcoholic solution, apply a moisturizing cream / emollient (with no perfume), immediately after evaporation / drying of the alcoholic solutions; In cases of resistant eczema, it may be necessary to apply a dermocorticoid (for instance, betamethasone) at bedtime, until resolving the eczema, for a period not longer than 2 weeks; Avoid contact with irritating products without gloves; In the context of domestic work, avoid the frequent washing of the hands and contact with humid and liquid elements, always wearing gloves.
