8 June 2020 Author : Inês Brás Marques The spinal cord is part of the central nervous system. It is located inside the spine, in the spinal canal, thus protected by the vertebrae. It is lined by three the meninges. The spinal cord conducts nerve impulses between the brain and the rest of the body through the nerves. Myelitis is an inflammation of the spinal cord. There are several possible causes of myeliti , including infections, autoimmune diseases and even some medications or vaccines. The most frequent are: Viral infections, both during infection and after resolution of the infection (post-infectious myelitis); Autoimmune diseases that affect the central nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis. Myelitis can present with symptoms such as: Muscle weakness in the arms and legs; Sensitivity disorders, such as tingling or numbness; Bladder and/or bowel control disorders (incontinence, constipation). The treatment of myelitis is more often pharmacological, that is, with medications. Many patients have a good recovery from symptoms, but recovery may take months. In many cases only one isolated episode of myelitis occurs. However, in some patients myelitis episodes may recur or there may be other neurological symptoms. Thus, when there is an episode of meilitis follow up in a neurology consultation during the years following that episode is recommended.
