20 May 2019 Measuring nitric oxide (NO) in exhaled air constitutes a non-invasive evaluation of bronchial inflammation . It is performed with a chemiluminescence analyser that quantifies NO with a simple exhalation. Nitric oxide levels in exhaled air are standardised. This is why it is possible to check therapeutic control, especially the need for steroid treatment. This test is particularly important in diagnosis of asthmatic children and young people and monitoring of their treatment. High levels of this marker compound are present in patients with uncontrolled bronchial asthma. This test is also useful in assessing patients with a prolonged cough that is of unknown cause or difficult to control. The results are not reliable in adult smokers. This test can be performed from the age of seven years. It is contraindicated in cases of recent abdominal or thoracic surgery.
