May 7, 2026 Author : Luísa Mesquita (podiatry ) Changes in nail appearance can have several causes. Mycoses or fungal infections represent a significant portion of the causes; When located on the nails, these mycosis infections are called onychomycosis; The changes they cause are mainly in the color and texture of the nails; The Fotona system has shown good results in the treatment of onychomycosis. What is the Fotona laser and how does it work? The Fotona system is a medical device that combines various types of lasers . It has several clinical applications, including dermatology, namely for onychomycosis treatment. In the treatment of nail fungus, the Nd:YAG laser of the Fotona system is used , which penetrates deeply into the tissues. This laser can penetrate the keratin of the nail plate and act mainly on the nail bed, where the fungi are located. Through the action of heat, it selectively reduces their viability and capacity for growth and multiplication, without causing lesions in healthy tissues. Additionally, this laser also promotes hyperemia (increased blood flow), favoring the arrival of oxygen and essential nutrients necessary for the nail to grow stronger and healthier. This is also facilitated by the fact that the fungi no longer feed on the keratin of the nail. What to expect from laser treatment for nail fungus? The treatment is painless ; only a gradual warming sensation is perceived and there is no discomfort in the treated area. The treatment does not involve any recovery measures; the routine can be resumed immediately after the treatment sessions. Typically, laser treatment for onychomycosis requires 3-4 sessions, performed at intervals of 3-4 weeks . The results of the treatment are not immediately visible. The final effect depends on the progressive growth of the healthy nail, replacing the damaged part. Generally, the first signs of improvement are visible more quickly in fingernails than in toenails, because the former grow faster. Thus, results may begin to be noticeable after 1-2 months on the hands or 2-3 months on the feet. The final appearance may take 6 to 12 months. The number of sessions and time until the final result is not fixed, it also varies with the particularities of each person. For example, it may be necessary to carry out more treatment sessions and recovery may be slower: When dealing with more extensive and/or old onychomycosis; In people with peripheral circulation problems and/or advanced age. Preventing onychomycosis: the secret to success Treatment of onychomycosis, whether with laser or another method, does not eliminate the possibility of reinfection . Therefore, both the prevention of onychomycosis and the success of its treatment depend largely on individual daily care , especially in the case of the feet. Wash and dry your feet well, paying special attention to the nails and spaces between the toes; Wash (or thoroughly clean) and disinfect your shoes regularly; If possible, alternate your footwear throughout the week; Prioritize the use of cotton socks; Do not share files, scissors, nail clippers, or other instruments that have not been previously disinfected; Do not walk barefoot in places frequented by several people, especially in conditions that favor the growth of fungi (heat and humidity), such as locker rooms. These measures are essential to prevent diseases and maintain good foot health in the long term. Meet the podiatry clinical team from Hospital da Luz network.
