February 14, 2025 Author: Ana Filipa Brás Aesthetic and functional regenerative gynecology aims to restore the anatomy and function of the external genital region of wome n, rejuvenating and harmonizing it, in order to improve well-being and quality of life, namely regarding sexuality. Who is it for and in what situations is it indicated? Regenerative gynecology interventions can be indicated in multiple situations , from congenital and acquired anatomical alterations to functional consequences related to aging. Examples are: Congenital anatomical changes: asymmetry, hypertrophy and atrophy of the labia minora. Acquired anatomical changes: resulting from obstetric trauma, surgical sequelae, weight fluctuations, recurrent vaginitis and scars. Aging-related changes, including reduced collagen, loss of elasticity and lubrication, internal and external genital atrophy, hyperpigmentation, pelvic muscle hypotonia, and urinary incontinence. Main techniques and procedures Treatment planning in aesthetic and functional regenerative gynecology must always be individualized, after a detailed evaluation of each woman by a doctor with expertise in this area. In many cases, the best outcome and satisfaction comes from a combination of several procedures. The main techniques and procedures in the area of aesthetic and functional regenerative gynecology are: 1. Intimate laser The intimate laser is a CO2 laser , performed using fractional beams of light that are emitted by a tip adapted to the vaginal canal. Intimate laser treatments stimulate collagen production , promote regeneration and reconstruction of the vaginal mucosa improving its elasticity, tone and firmness, and promote water retention, ameliorating hydration and nutrition. The main indications for intimate laser are: Vaginal atrophy and sagging; Mild urinary incontinence; Pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia); Atrophic vaginitis associated with lactation; Recurrent vaginitis; Removal of lesions and genital warts; 2. Intimate filling Intimate filling is a procedure that uses the application of hyaluronic acid in the vulvar region , promoting the replacement of volume and hydration of the region naturally. 3. Biostimulator for vulvar rejuvenation With the application of the appropriate biostimulator, the production of collagen and elastin in the intimate region is stimulated , promoting improvements in the elasticity, firmness and texture of the vulvar skin. This non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure can improve lip contour, providing a fuller, more youthful appearance. 4. Peeling for vulvar whitening Using advanced techniques and dermatologically tested products, the peeling promotes cell renewal and the reduction of blemishes , resulting in a more uniform and rejuvenated appearance. 5. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) Platelets are blood cells that play a key role in the clotting and wound healing process. Centrifuging a blood sample allows to obtain plasma with a high concentration of platelets, which, when applied to specific areas, promotes tissue regeneration. This happens because the growth factors present in platelet-rich plasma stimulate the production of new cells and blood vessels, promoting skin revitalization and rejuvenation, whether to improve healing, reduce sagging or regenerate tissue. In the area of aesthetic and functional regenerative gynecology, the following can benefit from treatment with platelet-rich plasma: Vulvar lichen sclerosus; Chronic vulvovaginal fissures; Retractable episiotomy scars; Hypertrophic or keloid scars from cesarean section or gynecological surgery; Vulvovaginal atrophy; O-Shot (orgasm shot) for women who want increased clitoral sensitivity with orgasm amplification, providing a more intense and pleasurable sexual response. 6. Botulinum toxin for vaginismus Vaginismus is an excessive contraction of the vaginal muscles that can cause discomfort, difficulty or even make sexual activity impossible. The application of botulinum toxin is an effective solution for vaginismus, helping to relax the vaginal muscles. 7. Labiaplasty Labioplasty is an intimate aesthetic surgical procedure that aims to modify the size, shape and appearance of the labia minora. The reasons for undergoing labiaplasty vary, including some women who wish to reduce the physical discomfort caused by hypertrophic or asymmetrical labia minora, which can cause irritation or interfere with daily activities, such as wearing tight clothing, exercising or engaging in sexual activity. Other women opt for labiaplasty for purely aesthetic reasons, wanting to improve the appearance of the genital region. This content was prepared by the Gynecology-Obstetrics team at Hospital da Luz.
