Breast cancer is the most common neoplasm in women all over the world and mastectomy can be the indicated treatment. Paulina Viana Lopes , João Leal de Faria , Rodrigo Oom and Gerardo Millán , surgeons of the Breast Centre from Hospital da Luz Lisboa , presented on Advances in Surgery Channel a case of a patient submitted in this hospital to a skin and nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM). Advances in Surgery Channel is an online forum where the top specialists from all over the world share studies and videos of clinical cases and medical and surgical researches. The NSM is a surgical technique fundamental to approach breast cancer, and, given its complexity, it must be performed by dedicated teams ensuring the oncologic and reconstructive safety of the procedure. In the case presented by Hospital da Luz Lisboa’s surgeons, the 41-year old patient undertook firstly chemotherapy and was later submitted to skin and nipple-sparing mastectomy, according to the plan established in a multidisciplinary meeting of the Oncology Centre. The post-operative stage showed no complications and the patient is presently being followed-up by the Breast Centre of Hospital da Luz Lisboa, with no evidence of relapse of the oncologic disease and with a good aesthetic result. “This case demonstrates well how fundamental is the multidisciplinary approach in breast cancer and that the teams should be specialized not only in oncologic treatment, but also in the different types of breast reconstruction. It is very important to combine the best oncologic treatment with breast reconstruction, that, on its turn, must be adapted to each patient in an increasingly personalized way”, conclude the surgeons. In this Pink October, the Month of Breast Cancer Prevention, it should be reminded that prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer through screening exams are determinant to achieve the best results possible: increasing the chances of survival and the quality of life of patients.
