The scientific journal “Frontiers in Physiology” published an article based on a research work being developed at Hospital da Luz Lisboa and Hospital da Luz Learning Health , on the origins of ventricular extrasystoles. The research is being conducted on the initiative of Ana Leonor Costa Parreira , cardiologist specialized in Cardiac Electrophysiology. Ventricular extrasystoles: Are supplementary anomalous heartbeats originated in the ventricles, instead of the normal ones that are sinus node originated. It’s quite common to detect them in a 24-hour Holter monitoring (a cardiac exam where heartbeats are recorded along 24 hours); Are considered benign, but highly symptomatic for patients; May result in cardiac dilation when very frequent, or give origin to more serious arrhythmias. “We believe that, even in the absence of cardiopathy in different exams, including magnetic resonance, there is a subjacent substrate responsible for the occurrence of these arrhythmias”, explains Ana Leonor Costa Parreira . “In this work, we show additional evidence that confirms the presence of subjacent electric alterations, which could represent the substrate for the occurrence of ventricular extrasystoles”, she adds. This study, that will probably extend for at least another year, is being financed in the context of the initiative Luz Research by Learning Health , launched in 2020 to support research projects in the units of Luz Saúde group. Research and innovation are a strategic bet of Luz Saúde, offering its professionals the conditions to develop their activities. Hospital da Luz Learning Health is the group’s company exclusively dedicated to professional training, research and innovation in the area of health.
