There has to be a balance between the measures of prevention for COVID-19, that are here to stay for long, and the protection of patients in terms of continuity of care and non-aggravation of ophthalmological diseases – explains Filomena Ribeiro , the director of Ophthalmology from Hospital da Luz Lisboa, in an interview to Eurotimes, the official publication of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), the most representative European organization of ophthalmologists. In the interview – that has for title “Striking the right balance in Portugal” –, Filomena Ribeiro further describes the measures that have been taken by Hospital da Luz Lisboa in order to prevent and minimize the risks of COVID-19 for clients in general and for ophthalmological patients in particular. “Strict measures” have been taken to limit the exposure of professionals and patients to covid-19 and “to minimize the risk of patients worsening their eye diseases”, she says, and also stressing: “Even as citizens will be facing a new world after this catastrophe and its consequences will transform our way of practicing”.
