Guilherme Macedo , gastroenterologist at Hospital da Luz, was elected president of the World Gastroenterology Organization , during the world congress which took place in Istanbul, between 21 and 24 September. Gastroenterologist in Hospital da Luz Póvoa de Varzim since 1991 , he coordinates the Service of Gastroenterology in this unit and also at Hospital da Luz Amarante, Arrábida, Cerveira, Guimarães, Porto and Vila Real. Guilherme Macedo is also the vice-president of the Portuguese society of the specialty and director in that same area at Hospital de S. João, in Porto. “It is definitely a great distinction for Portuguese gastroenterology . Our contribution, in this area of knowledge, goes beyond the inevitable demonstration of clinical, technical and scientific competence, embracing and expressing a particular capacity to understand and act in the multiple fronts presented to gastroenterology at global level, in the aspects of training, assistance and research”, stated the physician. “The highly prestigious and globally acclaimed World Gastroenterology Organization, with the noble mission of promoting digestive health, is a platform of intervention throughout the world, from the most develop countries to the less equipped ones, the Portuguese presence being significant and now renowned in the main educational and assisting programs”, he added.
