Hospital da Luz Arrábida has now available a high-definition breast tomosynthesis device, that allows more precise exams adjusted to each patient, which are fundamental factors in the early diagnosis of breast cancer. This acquisition reflects our investment in the continual technological development and improvement of our services. Breast tomosynthesis – also known as 3D mammography – is a state-of-the-art technology, that combines tomosynthesis and mammography, thus widening the amount of information gathered, contributing to an earlier diagnosis of breast cancer, therefore, a better prognosis of the disease. The high-definition tomosynthesis technology : Provides excellent quality 3D image, to view all anatomic details even of the smallest lesions; Allows to perform a routine mammography with lower doses of radiation (a reduction of almost 30%, minimizing the exposure to X-rays without compromising the quality of image), in a fast and comfortable way, and the small increase of radiation used in tomosynthesis avoids the incidence of complementary and/or repeated exams; Allows the radiologist to make a more precise and effective diagnosis. To undertake these 3D mammographies, specific prescription is necessary, at the discretion of the radiologist, according to the evaluation of each case. Breast cancer is the most frequent malignant tumour in women in Portugal – over 4.000 cases each year –, but it is curable in over two thirds of cases, when early detected.
