Hospital da Luz Coimbra established a partnership with the Handball Section of Associação Académica de Coimbra (AAC) for the season 2020/2021. The protocol between the two institutions was signed by Pedro Beja Afonso, the executive manager of Hospital da Luz Coimbra, and João Paulo Dias, president of the AAC/Handball. Hospital da Luz Coimbra becomes, this way, the official provider of medical services to the senior and junior teams of AAC/Handball. For the executive manager of Hospital da Luz Coimbra, Pedro Beja Afonso, this partnership “has for goal to promote the practice of sport in the younger population, even in these challenging moments we live in as society”. This partnership allows senior and junior athletes to find in Hospital da Luz a diversified and highly specialized offer, in services and health professionals. Founded on 1938 March 17, the Handball Section is one of the oldest in Académica and includes several teams in formation, senior and veteran levels, counting with 90 athletes. It was national champion in the second league, in season 1987/88, and it was in the first league until the season 1991/92. Last September, it entered the National Second League. At formation level, it counts with several presences in the final stages of national championships, on different levels, having conquered several regional and district titles. “This partnership represents a significant increase of quality in the provision of specialized services to athletes, ensuring the best healthcare provided by an entity of reference, such as Hospital da Luz Coimbra. And it entails an even greater responsibility from AAC/Handball, for the confidence placed in the project Renascer Andebol (Revive Handball), that views to promote the practice of sport among dozens of young athletes, without neglecting the pursuit of the best sportive results, reinforcing Handball in Coimbra”, states, on the other hand, João Paulo Dias, president of AAC/Handball.
