Over 50 internists and recently specialized physicians in General Surgery, Urology and Gynaecology attended the 4 th edition of the Integrated Course of Laparoscopy – Understand the Basics , organized by Hospital da Luz Learning Health, that took place in December 18 and 19. “This course teaches the basic concepts of endoscopic surgery and laparoscopic suture, bridging the gap in training in the area and at this level of education”, declares José Reis , who integrated the organizing committee, together with Pedro Amado and Rui Carneiro . “With 54 enrolled participants, we have had an average attendance to the webinar of around 50 trainees along the course, which demonstrates the interest of the sessions provided. Besides the innovation introduced this year, allowing the trainees to review the theoretical sessions for a period of two months”, highlights José Reis. The Integrated Course of Laparoscopy – Understand the Basics counted with the sponsorship of the Portuguese Society of Surgery, the Portuguese Society of Minimally Invasive Surgery, the Portuguese Society of Gynaecology, and the Portuguese Association of Urology. “Taking advantage of the common core and promoting connection between specialties, we gathered here trainers and trainees of the specialties that use endoscopic surgery”, further explains this specialist. Integrated Course of Laparoscopy - Understand the Basics The theoretical part of the course took place on webinar platform, and the practical part, with simulation training (see photo above), at the Centre of Training, Research and Innovation from Hospital da Luz Learning Health. Along two days, trainees had the opportunity to review anatomical concepts, become familiar with the instruments used in laparoscopy, learn the safety rules and entry techniques, as well as the major complications. In the practical part, they inaugurated the new Winco Mastery Laparoscopy endotrainer and the Lap Mentor simulator, also receiving a two-hour scholarship to be used in training at the Centre, from January on. This course format allows the trainee to gain knowledge on all the equipment and material necessary in laparoscopic surgery, as well as the basic procedures. Training in laparoscopic simulators and boxes, with performance evaluation in real time, offers an immersive and realistic experience.
