The loss of hearing affects millions of people all over the world and has great impact on communication, education, employment, and social and affective relations. On the World Hearing Day , celebrated on March 3, the Otorhinolaryngology Service from Hospital da Luz Torres de Lisboa offers free screening open to the general public. The World Hearing Day is promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO), with the purpose of alerting to the need of preventing and early detecting the loss of hearing , as well as raising awareness for the impact of constant noise in hearing decline. The WHO estimates that about 5% of the world population (466 million people) suffers from incapacitating hearing impairment. Otorhinolaryngology is the medical specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the ears, nose, throat and neck, including salivary glands, voice, olfaction and balance.
