Hospital da Luz Learning Health, with the support of Hospital da Luz Lisboa Ophthalmology Department, organized between June 29 and July 2, the 2 nd Training Course for Trainers in Simulated Ophthalmic Surgery . The 20 participants – all specialists in ophthalmology and dedicated to cataract and vitreoretinal surgery – had the opportunity to make contact and work with modern simulators, thus preparing the program of simulation courses in the area that HL Learning Health has scheduled for 2022. Clinical simulation is an interactive and innovating educational methodology that aims to enhance knowledge, clinical performance and the confidence levels of students and professionals in the area of health, in an attempt to respond to the challenges facing today’s medical education. In the training based on simulation, learning occurs in a safe, realistic and predictable environment, without putting the patient at risk – the role of the “teachers” (trainers) being fundamental in this whole process. “The teacher has the task of structuring, engaging and motivating, so as to attain the desired outcome during the simulation training. Therefore, the training of trainers should be an area of mandatory investment by institutional leaders, guaranteeing the updating of professionals at scientific, technological and pedagogical level”, highlights Filomena Ribeiro , the director of HL Lisboa Ophthalmology Service and scientific coordinator of these courses. Initiated in 2019, the simulation courses in cataract surgery and vitreoretinal surgery by HL Learning Health use the world’s most modern simulators and are an innovation in education in Portugal. Namely: The Cataract Basic Course (for internists of the 1 st and 2 nd years of speciality); The Cataract Advanced Course and the Vitreoretinal Surgery Basic Course (destined to specialists and internists from the 3 rd year on). All the information concerning the courses of Hospital da Luz Learning Health Simulation Centre is regularly updated in the site , as well as in the relevant social media channels. Stay tuned to the 2022 schedule and the program in the area of Ophthalmology!
