For the first time in the region of Trás-os-Montes, a patient with an abdominal aortic aneurism of complex anatomy , a disease that can be fatal, was treated through the implantation of an aortic branch endoprosthesis. The surgery , resorting to a minimally invasive technique , was performed last December 18 by surgeons Mário Marques Vieira and João Rocha Neves , in the Service of Vascular Surgery from Hospital da Luz Vila Real, the patient being presently in recovery at home, as planned. The abdominal aortic aneurism is a progressive and silent dilation of the abdomen main artery, with high risk of disruption, and in this case a high mortality rate. The development of minimally invasive techniques, such as EVAR (Endovascular Aneurysm Repair), with prostheses implantation, in the correction of these aneurysms, is now possible, with low surgical risk and fast recovery for patients . In complex anatomical situations, this correction requires the use of specific endoprostheses, branch or fenestrated, where a high level of technical capacities and cutting-edge technological resources are imperative. The application of this procedure represents an historical milestone in the region of Trás-os-Montes . Hospital da Luz Vila Real takes pride in continuing offering its patients the most advanced and innovating techniques of medical and surgical treatment presently available.
