The European Society of Medical Oncology ( ESMO ) renewed its certification of the Unit of Palliative Care of Hospital da Luz Lisboa, as a centre of excellence in healthcare providing in this area, in articulation with Oncology. The certification, now valid for the triennium 2021-2023, reflects the work developed by professionals in this hospital, now completing 10 years with this seal of quality and excellence by ESMO (assigned for the first time in 2011). The Unit of Palliative Care at Hospital da Luz Lisboa was the first in Portugal to receive this distinction from ESMO. The Unit and the Oncology Centre of Hospital da Luz Lisboa count with a team of nurses and physicians specialized in Oncology, Radiotherapy and Palliative Care, that provides healthcare to hospitalized patients and in ambulatory. The Oncology Centre, directed by José Luís Passos Coelho, follows every year around 700 patients, and the Unit of Palliative Care, directed by Isabel Galriça Neto, an average of 550 (half of which with oncologic disease). As highlighted by ESMO , these services develop additionally an intense activity of medical training and training of other groups of health professionals.
