Rita Gama , Hospital da Luz Lisboa ophthalmologist, was distinguished with the best scientific poster presented in the Autumn Meeting of the Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology (SPO), which took place on October 4, in Guimarães. The Autumn Meeting is promoted by five groups of SPO: the Portuguese Group of Ocular Inflammation, Portuguese Group of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the Portuguese Group of Neuro-Ophthalmology, Portuguese Group of Orbit and Oculoplastics, and the Portuguese Group of Ocular Oncology, Pathology and Genetics. Several studies in the area of ocular inflammation, paediatric ophthalmology and metabolic diseases were submitted to appraisal. The poster by Rita Gama (in the photo above) – entitled “ Differences between optic discs in children and adults, measured by optical coherence tomography” – was considered the best one.In this study, it is concluded that optic discs in children and adults are different, allowing to infer from there the modifications suffered by the optical nerve over the years.“There are few similar studies, and its great value is the analysis by means of state-of-the-art equipment, the optical coherence tomography ”, explains Rita Gama. Also Susana Teixeira , ophthalmologist in the units of Hospital da Luz network in Amadora, Lisboa and Torres de Lisboa, was distinguished by the National Congress of Ophthalmology in Russia , held last June.The specialist provided a course on ocular traumatology during the congress of the European Vitreo Retinal Society (EVRS), which took place in Lisbon, between 27 and 30 June – a very participated course that was streamed to the Fyodorov Institute , in Moscow.
