André Barros , Hospital da Luz Lisboa orthopaedist that has dedicated his work to shoulder and elbow surgery in adults, has been granted an award in the major European Congre ss devoted to arthroscopic surgery and sports traumatology – which took place between 11 and 15 May, on digital format –, for the work he presented, entitled “Knotted suture vs. knotless tape repair – prospective and randomised trial”. The work by André Barros, Eduardo Carpinteiro and Sérgio Gonçalves received one of the awards delivered in the congress of the European Society for Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA), the Porto Award for Innovation in Arthroscopy , which represents a further international recognition of the work being developed by the team of shoulder and elbow of the Hospital da Luz Lisboa Orthopaedics Service. The clinical results of the study made along four years to two arthroscopic surgical techniques for the treatment of recurrent shoulder instability were presented – one of them developed by the team of Shoulder and Elbow from Hospital da Luz Lisboa, coordinated by orthopaedist Eduardo Carpinteiro . In the study presented by André Barros before 450 participants and speakers in this ESSKA congress, results “surprisingly positive in selected patients” were revealed, using this surgical technique, that was recognized and distinguished by the scientific council of the congress for its innovation. ESSKA is the major European medical organization in the area of arthroscopy and sports traumatology, gathering in its annual congress specialists from all over the world to share the latest technical and surgical innovations in the field. With the distinction bestowed to Hospital da Luz Lisboa orthopaedist, the Portuguese participation in this year’s congress was in highlight, once again, demonstrating the quality of the national specialists and clinical teams in this area of medicine.
