The “Loss of Monitoring Signal” was the theme of Maia Gonçalves’ intervention, orthopaedist specialized in spine pathology in the units of Hospital da Luz Arrábida and Póvoa de Varzim , during the 8 th International Congress of the Portuguese Society of Spinal Column Pathology (SPPCV). Spine surgeries present different degrees of complexity that vary depending on the disease to treat. Statistically rare, there are surgical risks that may arise and should be controlled, so as to ensure maximum safety and quality to the patient during surgery, namely through intraoperative neuromonitoring. “ At Hospital da Luz Arrábida, we resort to efficient and innovating techniques, capable of preventing surgical complications – among them neuromonitoring, which consists in the continuous intraoperative evaluation of the marrow and nervous roots, involving a guiding stimulus that detects eventual neurologic complications. Through previous knowledge, it is possible to act in anticipation, in a coherent, coordinated and effective way, reversing the process and avoiding post-operative risks ”, explains Maia Gonçalves. In this congress of the SPPCV , which took place in Oporto, between October 31 and November 2, Maia Gonçalves gave a lecture focused in the loss of monitoring signal . The specialist approached the topic based on his experience in intraoperative neuromonitoring and highlighted the best practices to consider.
