Miguel Gonçalves Ferreira , otorhinolaryngologist at Hospital da Luz Arrábida, concluded his doctorate degree in Medicine, in the specialty of Otorhinolaryngology, last September 25, in the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS), Universidade do Porto. In his thesis, Miguel Gonçalves Ferreira, who also practices at Centro Hospital Universitário do Porto, presented an anatomical study of the nose structure “K-area”, and the clinical and laboratorial demonstration of the efficacy of Spare Roof Technique (SRT), a surgical technique he has developed to treat the so-called “nasal hump”. The otorhinolaryngologist published 12 scientific articles (Pubmed indexed) on this topic in the most prestigious journals of the specialties of Otorhinolaryngology and Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. The thesis – entitled “Spare roof technique biomechanical demonstration and its useful purpose in septorhinoplasty” – was unanimously approved, the jury highlighting the high quality of the work developed. The jury , presided by Artur Águas (ICBAS), included António Carlos Miguéis (Faculty of Medicine, Universidade de Coimbra), Óscar Proença Dias (Faculty of Medicine, Universidade de Lisboa), Diogo Casal (Faculty of Medical Sciences, Universidade Nova de Lisboa), José Manuel Amarante (thesis advisor, from FMUP – Faculty of Medicine, Universidade do Porto), António Costa Ferreira (FMUP) and José La Fuente de Carvalho (ICBAS). What is SRT The nose hump (or dorsal hump deformity), quite common in the Portuguese population, is the most prevalent deformity, which is caused by the lack of a cartilage growth inhibitor protein after puberty. This deformity has serious implications in the quality of life of the individual, both in functional and aesthetical terms. It requires complete correction, through septorhinoplasty or functional rhinoplasty. SRT consists in an approach to the upper and middle third of the nose, lowering it and simultaneously improving breathing. This technique developed by Miguel Gonçalves Ferreira is faster and consistently more stable, besides avoiding the insertion of grafts, that always cause problems later on for patients submitted to rhinoplasty .
