Hospital da Luz Coimbra celebrated , last December 19, a protocol with Clube Náutico Académico (CNAC) and the swimmer Tomás Veloso , with the purpose to support this athlete in his physical preparation for the Tokyo Olympic Games, in July 2020. Tomás Veloso intends to ensure his qualification in the European Long-Course Swimming Championship, that will take place in May of the next year. “ It is examples like Tomás Veloso that bring youngsters to the practice of sport and raise awareness to the adoption of healthier life styles. With its health professionals and equipment of physical medicine and rehabilitation, Hospital da Luz Coimbra will support the athlete in the optimization of his physical performance ”, explains Pedro Beja Afonso, Hospital da Luz Coimbra manager. The specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation from Hospital da Luz Coimbra will make available to the athlete all the valences necessary , including manual muscle strengthening, kinesiotherapy special techniques, postural re-education, vertebral kinesiotherapy and isokinetic evaluation, among others. Tomás Veloso , 23 years old, already counts with 84 national podiums. He had his first internationalization with 15 years old, has participated in European championships and, in 2019, he qualified for the World Championship (Gwangju’19), presently being the only athlete in Coimbra to achieve such a goal. As highlighted by Sara Gameiro, CNAC’s chairman of the board, Tomás Veloso is already “ a reference ” in the modality, at regional and national level. This support by Hospital da Luz Coimbra “ will be fundamental to underpin all the necessary valences in terms of physical recovery/strengthening and prevention, becoming an indispensable basis for the attainment of the success pursued ”, she added.
