The second edition of the Health Hackathon promoted by Hospital da Luz Learning Health and the National Association of Biomedical Engineering Students (ANEEB) took place on the 25 and 26 September, with the participation of eight teams of students in the areas of medicine and biomedical engineering from all over the country. The winning team presented a solution to improve the experience of hospitalized patients in situations of palliative and continuing care in the hospitals of the future. “What will be the hospitals of the future?” was, in fact, the challenge proposed to the more than 30 students, which had to present solutions within 24 hours. Besides the selection of the winning project, in this Hospital da Luz Learning Health/ANEEB Health Hackathon, two honourable mentions were awarded to the teams who presented the ideas of higher sustainability and social impact. “Hackathon” ( to hack + marathon ) is the designation given to a working method originally used by start-ups, gathering programmers, designers and other professionals associated with the development of software, in true marathons of work with the goal of creating specific solutions for one or several challenges. In the meanwhile, it began to be used in other areas as a method of multidisciplinary brainstorming , where a spirit of innovation is cultivated. The Health Hackathon developed in partnership by Hospital da Luz Learning Health and ANEEB views to promote a culture of open innovation and a multidisciplinary ecosystem involving health professionals and university students in finding a solution for a real challenge of Luz Saúde. It is destined to biomedical engineering and medicine students, but also from other health areas, such as nursing, pharmaceutical sciences and nutrition.
