This surgical technique to treat nasal hump developed by Miguel Gonçalves Ferreira , Hospital da Luz Arrábida otorhinolaryngologist, is one of the topics in highlight in the latest editions of two renowned scientific journals in the area, “ The Laryngoscope ” and “ ENToday ”, which approach the positive and consistent results obtained. The most prevalent deformity of the nose is the so-called nasal hump (quite common among the Portuguese population), and its origin may be related with the lack of an inhibiting protein of cartilaginous growth after puberty. This is a functional defect with serious implications in the quality of life of the individual, both in functional and aesthetical terms, and requires total correction through septorhinoplasty or functional rhinoplasty . For such cases, Miguel Gonçalves Ferreira developed the SRT technique (Spare Roof Technique) . The results obtained in the first 100 patients (33 male and 67 female) treated in latest years through SRT, were object of a scientific study , entitled “ Spare roof Technique in reduction rhinoplasty: prospective study of the first one hundred patients ”. SRT consists in an approach to the upper and middle third of the nose, lowering it and simultaneously improving breathing. This technique – indicated for hump noses and also deviated – is faster and more stable , besides avoiding the insertion of grafts, that always cause problems later for people submitted to rhinoplasty. Conclusion of the study: This prospective statistical study confirms that SRT significantly improved patient quality of life regarding nose function and appearance. It is a reliable technique that can help deliver consistently good results in reduction rhinoplasty in Caucasian patients with dorsal hump seeking rhinoplasty Established in 1890, the North-American journal “The Laryngoscope” is the main channel of dissemination of advances in the diagnosis and treatment of pathologies in this clinical area. Just like “ENToday”, it belongs to the North-American scientific societies in the area of Otorhinolaryngology. “SRT in reduction rhinoplasty: prospective study of the first one hundred patients”
