There are moments where youngsters have to make important decisions as to the path to take in their life and education. At Hospital da Luz Lisboa , our Psychology team proceeds to the evaluation and the necessary tests to empower youngsters to make decisions in an informed and conscious manner. This process of school and vocational guidance: Starts with an interview in a Psychology consultation – Educational and Vocational Guidance ; Includes the completion of psychometric tests evaluating different dimensions (such as abilities, preferences and professional interests, values and personality); Ends with the final presentation of results and the delivery of a report, where the youth is elucidated on the different options that could potentiate his capacities, abilities and preferences. In the Portuguese school system, the youngsters’ main choices are made in the end of elementary education – by the end of the ninth grade, when they have to choose between four areas of sciences and humanities in secondary education or opt for a different educational route – and by the end of secondary school (twelfth grade), when they have to decide on the course to apply to and, in most cases, they need to choose alternatives and place them in order of preference. Moreover, many university students realize, after a while, that they did not make the right choice and wish to reconsider their path. The psychological intervention promotes self-awareness and reflexion on professional choices , thus reinforcing confidence in decision-making through reasoning. Hospital da Luz Lisboa has a vastly experienced team of psychologists and resources available to better empower youngsters in these stages of their lives.
