The five maternity hospitals within Hospital da Luz Network – Arrábida (Vila Nova de Gaia), Guimarães, Lisboa, Póvoa de Varzim and Vila Real – performed 4.759 deliveries along 2025, with a total of 4.796 babies born. The largest maternity unit was Hospital da Luz Lisboa with 4.035 babies, thus beating its record for the fifth consecutive year, now exceeding for the first time the threshold of four thousand babies. After Lisboa, the maternities units with more births were Hospital da Luz Guimarães (204), Arrábida (200), Póvoa de Varzim (197), and Vila Real (160). September was the month with the highest number of births; there have been more boys than girls born and a record of 43 sets of twins. Of the total of 4.796 babies born in Hospital da Luz maternity units, around a thousand were first children. In global terms – more 57 births than in 2024 – this has followed the national trend of birth rate increase compared to the previous year.
