The demand for aesthetic procedures has been rising in Madeira and the authorities alert to the fact that, in many cases, they are performed by people not dully qualified, and especially with no medical supervision and subsequent risk for health. “Be sure to inform yourselves previously, do not simply believe in advertising”, alerted Manuel Figueiroa , specialist in Maxillofacial Surgery, and Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at Hospital da Luz Funchal , in an interview to RTP Madeira. In question are mainly the procedures based on collagen, Botox and hyaluronic acid administration. “These are simple procedures, less invasive than aesthetic surgery, but which nevertheless should be performed by qualified people, namely doctors” , explained the surgeon, alerting to the many dangers, such as excessive dosage, improper application, and most of all, the subsequent complications. “A physician knows what complications may occur and how to act accordingly”, he highlighted, adding that, despite the existing legislation in the area, there are establishments that do not comply and there is a lack of supervision.
