André Sousa Machado , Hospital da Luz otorhinolaryngologist (Vila Real and Amarante), concluded last June 16 his doctorate degree in Medicine, speciality of Otorhinolaryngology , at Beira Interior University (UBI), Covilhã. His thesis, entitled “Neuroanatomy of the lateral nasal wall and its impact on nasal surgery” , received the unanimous approval of the jury which highlighted in the appraisal the quality of the work developed. In his research for the thesis, André Sousa Machado analysed in detail the nose nerves anatomy, in particular its deepest structures hard to visualize during surgery. Mapping the trajectory of such nerves, this work represents a valuable instrument to operate this anatomical region with higher precision and safety, reducing the risk of complication and increasing the efficacy of nose and paranasal sinus surgeries. From these studies conducted by André Sousa Machado resulted six scientific articles on the same subject, published in renowned international publications on otorhinolaryngology and rhinology, along with a chapter in a scientific book and eight presentations in European otorhinolaryngology and rhinology congresses.
