Hospital da Luz Lisboa will offer, next March 3, a course on Baby Led Weaning (BLW), a method for solid food introduction in the baby’s diet, after the period of exclusive breastfeeding. “BLW, from theory to practice” will be given by Maria Fernandez, nurse specialist in Maternal Health and Obstetrics, with a degree in Paediatric Nutrition. The baby’s initiation into solid foods should happen ideally around the age of six months, depending on the maturity of the child and his ability to chew. On Baby Led Weaning: As the name implies, it is the baby himself who guides his own feeding and the weaning from milk; Among the benefits reported are, for instance, a lower risk of obesity (since the baby controls what he eats), higher autonomy, the contact with a larger variety of foods and less difficulties with the consistency of foods; There are rules to observe, especially due to the possibility of choking, but also due to the risk of the baby not eating sufficient nutrients for his development. The application of BLW on daily routine raises frequently many questions for parents, caretakers and even health professionals. The course “BLW, from theory to practice”: Seeks to answer the main concerns in the application of BLW: what it consists of, which are the benefits, how and when to start, the basic safety measures, which foods to use and how to prepare them adequately, and how to teach the baby. Has a four-hour duration. Is destined to couples expecting the birth of a child, parents and caretakers of children up to two years of age, and also health professionals interested in the area. Date and time: 3 rd March 2023, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Place: Hospital da Luz Lisboa auditorium Registration This course is integrated in the 2 nd Congress of Paediatrics of Hospital da Luz.
