Headache affects around 30% of the population and is the most common neurologic reason for consultations in General and Family Medicine, Neurology and Emergency assistance. To diagnose and better treat migraine, an often underdiagnosed and undervalued disease, was the purpose of this first edition of the Basic Course on Headache , a training course destined to physicians that was organized by Hospital da Luz Learning Health, on October 14 and 15. This was a theoretical-practical course, coordinated by the teams of Neurology and of the Headache Centre of Hospital da Luz Lisboa. “We realized that there is a relevant lack of training of health professionals, on these pathologies. Our goal with this training is to deliver basic knowledge – on neuroanatomy, semiology and therapeutics – that is important to identify the pathologies most frequently associated with headache, enabling general practitioners to apply the most accurate approach”, explains Raquel-Gil Gouveia , the director of Neurology and of the Headache Centre of Hospital da Luz Lisboa. This course is expected to have an annual periodicity, encompassing other Hospital da Luz units in different regions of the country. This first edition counted with around 20 participants (registrations are limited to ensure an intensive contact with trainees). Along one and a half day, whenever possible through the analysis of clinical cases, trainers and trainees sought to: Improve the collection of clinical data, viewing to establish an adequate differential diagnosis; Understand the physiopathology bases of the most frequent headaches, in the context of planned or urgent consultation; Learn how to make research and/or referral decisions, accordingly to the diagnosis; Learn the existing pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapeutic options, and learn how to make individualized decisions and monitor patients. The Basic Course on Headache was especially designed for internists and specialists in General and Family Medicine, Occupational Health, Dentistry, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Internal Medicine, Intensive Medicine, Anaesthesiology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Paediatrics and Psychiatry, nurses, physiotherapists, psychologists and nutritionists. It has the scientific sponsorship of the Portuguese Association of General Medicine and Family, the Order of Doctors, the Portuguese Society of Headache, and the Portuguese Society of Neurology.
