Surgeon urologist José Preza Fernandes performed on December 13, at Hospital da Luz Vila Real, the first treatment of a patient with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) through Rezum system . Rezum system is based on an innovating minimally invasive endoscopic technique , that is used to treat the symptoms caused by BPH: It operates through the application of water vapour that releases thermal energy into the prostate central zone (which causes urinary obstruction). After this injection and along three months, the prostatic tissue is destroyed and absorbed, thanks to the body natural regeneration. This treatment reduces, thus, the central volume of the prostate , creating a hollowed space inside the organ and facilitating the free passage of urine. Therefore, it allows the relief of urinary complaints in 95.6% of patients, besides preserving the sexual function without adverse effects. Besides Vila Real, José Preza Fernandes is urologist in the units of Hospital da Luz network of Amarante, Cerveira, Guimarães and Póvoa de Varzim.
