Dozens of bikers from the north of the country received, last September 7, training in Basic Life Support, including training with manikins, given by Hospital da Luz Guimarães professionals. The free training took place at the site of the 27th Bikers Concentration, in Parque Selho, in a joint organization with Conquistadores - Moto Clube de Guimarães. Throughout the morning, the bikers learn a body of practical and theoretical knowledge on Basic Life Support , consisting in a body of procedures to help and keep alive an individual in cardiorespiratory arrest, until the arrival of specialized assistance. How to identify a person in cardiorespiratory arrest, what is the chain of survival, what are the risks for the resuscitator, what is the lateral safety position and the airway clearance manoeuvres, were the topics approached. In the end, the motorcycle club members had the opportunity to practice what they had learned in manikins. The Hospital da Luz Guimarães team involved in this training included nurses João Vieira da Silva, Nuno Ribeiro, Hugo Costa, Mónica Carvalho, Pedro Ribeiro, José Pedro Guimarães and Teresa Moura, and also doctor Miguel Macedo . The cardiorespiratory arrest: Is a sudden event and represents one of the main causes of death worldwide, the BLS manoeuvres increasing substantially the chances of survival of victims, when initiated within the first minutes after the cardiac arrest. It consists essentially in two actions: thoracic compression and ventilation, with the purpose of preventing injuries in vital organs (brain and heart) and thus enhancing the chances of survival and recovery of the victims. This training happened in the context of a partnership between the Conquistadores Guimarães Motorcycle Club and Hospital da Luz Guimarães, which expresses its thanks for the invitation and all the support in the organization of the event. This was another initiative near the community regularly promoted by Hospital da Luz Guimarães, viewing to improve knowledge and access to healthcare. Whenever the community needs, we are there!
