The Oncology Centre of Hospital da Luz Lisboa joins the initiative Pink October (Outubro Rosa), promoting on October 21, in partnership with the Portuguese League Against Cancer , a symposium on breast cancer, open to the general public . The session will be free of costs, but requiring prior enrolment. The symposium will count with the participation of different specialists from the League and the Oncology Centre, including its director, José Luís Passos Coelho , besides patients giving their testimony. Some of the main topics related with breast cancer will be approached, namely: Nutrition and breast cancer; Hereditary breast cancer; Rights of oncologic patients; Emotions management; Support in disease. Breast cancer is the most common oncologic disease in women – with about 7 thousand new cases diagnosed every year in Portugal and 2 million worldwide –, but can also occur in men. Presently, with an early diagnosis and adequate treatment, breast cancer is curable in the large majority of cases. This is precisely the goal of the global initiative Pink October: raising awareness to the importance of prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer, namely through screening , and sharing information and forms of support to patients and their families.
