Carlos Palos , physician in Intensive Medicine and Internal Medicine and coordinator of the group of infection control and resistance to antimicrobials of Luz Saúde and Hospital Beatriz Ângelo, is the scientific directo r of the 19 th edition of Summer School, of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), which will take place in Carcavelos, between 4 and 11 September next, with the participation of specialists in infectology, clinical pathology and other professionals intervening in the area, national and foreign. ESCMID is one of the largest and most prestigious societies at international level, organizing every year its Summer School , an intensive course of one week , especially destined to professionals involved in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases and in the prevention and control of infection. This 19 th edition should have happened in 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Besides Carlos Palos, the panel of speakers integrates several professionals of Luz Saúde group . The program covers a wide range of topics in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases, of interest to physicians specialized in infectology, but also biologists, pharmacists, doctoral students and researchers working in infectious diseases . The Summer School 2021 precedes the ESCMID annual congress, already scheduled for April 2022, in Lisbon, which will be a first. Created in 1983, ESCMID is a non-governmental organization based in Basel (Switzerland) with the purpose of fighting infection , and having for motto “Promoting science, combating infections”. In that sense, it develops multiple educational initiatives and supports research projects aiming to improve the clinical practices of prevention, diagnosis and treatment. ESCMID has accredited centres in many countries. In Portugal, Hospital Beatriz Ângelo – which is run by Luz Saúde in a public-private partnership – is one of the two collaborative centres recognized by this society , being apt to receive and provide training in infection control to physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other health professionals from all over the world. Via Hospital da Luz Learning Health (the Luz Saúde company developing activities of training, research and innovation), HBA is the responsible for one module of the European program of certification in infection prevention and control.
