The Ophthalmology team from Hospital da Luz Clínica de Odivelas performs ophthalmological surgical interventions, among which cataract removal, a major cause of curable blindness. The first surgery of the kind performed at this clinic occurred in February and was ensured by this team, coordinated by ophthalmologist Daniel Vieira Dias . Cataract consists in the opacification of the crystalline (a type of lens suspended behind the pupil, which is essential to focus images on the retina), causing loss of vision. It is estimated that, in Portugal, about 170 thousand people have cataracts. Over the age of 60, six in ten people present signs of the disease. The only treatment for cataract is surgery , consisting in the removal of the altered crystalline and its replacement by a transparent lens. This operation allows the total recovery of vision (as long as other eye diseases are not present).
