The date deserved a special highlight. Therefore, the 1st and 2nd year students at Colégio Small Land, in São Julião do Tojal, Loures, received a visit from a group of doctors specializing in Pulmonology and spent part of the morning hearing about… tobacco. That's right! On World No Tobacco Day, May 31st , the doctors at Hospital da Luz Lisboa, also representing the Portuguese Society of Pulmonology and Hospital Beatriz Ângelo, put into practice the old saying that says that from an early age you learn and shape yourself the future. For around an hour, the children played games and experiments related to the theme of World Da y, prepared, and guided by the doctors, and always with the aim of raising awareness , in their own way, about the harms of tobacco consumption. Turning young people into ambassadors for the fight against tobacco is always the main theme of these initiatives. This time, the ‘trainers’ went further and wanted the kids’ parents to also get involved in this cause. All the children took home the ‘Smoke-Free Car’ sticker to give to their parents. This is not the first initiative of its kind, promoted by the pulmonology team at Hospital da Luz Lisboa in a school context. On May 7th, when World Asthma Day was marked, five pulmonologists from Hospital da Luz Lisboa were at Escola Básica Pedro d’Orey da Cunha, Amadora, in an action to raise awareness of the topic of asthma. Around 125 students were involved, aged between 8 and 14, who participated in activities on how to manage the disease in a school environment and underwent respiratory function screening with measurement of the maximum instantaneous respiratory flow (‘peak expiratory flow’).
