David Martins, ophthalmologist from Hospital da Luz Setúbal, was one of the individualities distinguished with a Medal of Honour by the City Council of Setúbal, during a ceremony celebrating Bocage and Setúbal Day, on September 15. The City Medal of Honour was bestowed to David Martins “in recognition of the valorous services provided to the population of Setúbal, in the area of Sciences and Technology” . The Medals of Honour of the City of Setúbal are granted to individualities and institutions that distinguish themselves “notably and in the most diverse areas, in a particular moment of local history or continually”, according to municipal deliberation on August 14, that approved the list of distinctions. Born in Angola, David Martins graduated in Medicine in 1977 and specialized in Ophthalmology at Hospital Egas Moniz, where he introduced, in 1989, the vitreoretinal surgery. He was president of Hospital de São Bernardo Administration Board, in Setúbal, between 1996 and 2003. In 2008, he was appointed director of the respective Service of Ophthalmology, position that he occupied until 2018, when he retired from the National Service of Health after 40 years of work. He was also founder and clinical director of Hospital de Santiago, the first private hospital in Setúbal, presently Hospital da Luz Setúbal. He performed teaching activity and is a member of several scientific societies in the area of Ophthalmology, besides integrating the board of different institutions in this city.
