What is diabetes, what are the warning signs in children and learning to live with diabetes in children, are some of the topics that will be covered in the workshop organized by Hospital da Luz Arrábida, on November 23 rd , to mark World Diabetes Day. Diabetes . The session is led by pediatric endocrinologist Filipa Espada and nurse specialist in child and pediatric health Conceição Lima, both from Hospital da Luz Arrábida, and is aimed at parents and care of children with diabetes. It takes place on the Hospital premises, between 11 am and 1 pm, and is open to the entire population free of charge, requiring prior registration to the email marketing.arrabida@hospitaldaluz.pt . Throughout the workshop the following topics will be covered: Diabetes; How to identify warning signs; Healthy eating in diabetes; Carbohydrate counting; reading labels; Living in a family with diabetes - a real case. Worldwide, it is estimated that more than one million children and young people aged between 0-19 years have type 1 diabetes. In Portugal alone, there will be more than three thousand. Children at risk are those who are overweight and who have two of the following risk factors: family history of type 2 diabetes in a 1 st or 2 nd degree relative; signs of insulin resistance or diseases associated with insulin resistance; maternal gestational diabetes or maternal history of diabetes.
